The best NYC travel apps will save you save time and money on your trip, as well as help you see more of NYC. There are apps for everything in NYC: food, subways, biking, museums, broadway, discounts, restaurants, sample sales and much more. One bonus for using many NYC travel apps is that they will offer you discounts or coupons when using them, especially for the first time. Another is that many NYC apps are available both online and offline, so you can use them even if WiFi is not available. Here are some our favorite NYC apps, for all devices.
For food in NYC, check out Seamless for ordering in, Open Table for dining out reservations and Yelp for reviews. For the subway, the MTA has it’s own app, or you can use CityMapper or Google Maps to plot your route anywhere in NYC. Remember to map route before going underground, as service is often disrupted when you are below the sidewalk.
Need a taxi? Try the official NYC Taxi app or Uber (although I always just raise my hand in the air like a real New Yorker). Google maps is especially great for biking around NYC. For discounts all around town, download groupon, living social and scoutmob. For broadway shows, both the tkts and todaytix apps will save you bundles.
Every single attraction in NYC has it’s own app: Central Park, Times Square, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Statue of Liberty, the 9-11 Memorial and Museum. Basically, all of them. Since navigating the Park or a Museum is a challenge even to those of us who’ve been there 2 dozen times, these are great apps to have and will save you tons of time and money. Even big events in NYC have their own apps: NYC Marathon, Times Square Ball Drop, Macy’s July 4th fireworks, Pride Week and more.
If you run into a medical emergency, pager has your back with a mobile app that allows users to request visits from certified doctors to wherever they are in New York City.
While planning your NYC visit, and while you are here, a New York City Pass is an absolute must. The New York Pass offers a great app you can download free, whether you use a pass or not, and will show you where you can find over 80 NYC attractions. Not only will a pass help you save, but you can plan your days with their itinerary program, budget your trip, add your flight and hotel information, see attractions hours and much more. You can also use the app as your entry pass into many of the attractions and skip the lines. Imagine all the things you WON’T have to carry with you on your trip.
For touring NYC, there are dozens of downloadable walking tour apps. Most neighborhoods have them, the Mayor’s office has one and many walking tour companies offer a DIY version. Also try the Fodor’s and Trip Advisor apps. Check here for all kinds of tours of New York City, like biking, walking, bus, helicopter, pedi cab, horse carriage and more.
